H.410 BORE (2 ½” OR 3”). But, there are also apparently a lot of guns without the barrel codes. Made right in the middle of when Remington was doing the barrel code thingy. I know; I have a Model 1100 LT20 Magnum (1978 vintage) with the original barrel and no barrel code, and an 870 12 gauge Magnum (circa 1976) with the original barrel, also with no code, and finally an 1100 28 gauge (Probably 1976 or 1977) with no barrel codes.
I love it when these things happen. Oh yes, they all have a lonely little proof mark on the other side of the barrel. Call Remington at 1-800-243-9700.(I think they are open M-F 9-5pm EST) Follow the prompts (I think it is 7 and then 1) and you can speak with an actual person who can tell you month and year the gun was made. Barrels might sit a bit but receiver are the parts that are serialized.
I have nothing but positive feedback to give Remington. The staff has been very helpful.
Nice to speak with folks. Just my $0.02 worth. Duke We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately. Benjamin Franklin. Wow, an over 8 year old thread revived. But, kudos on using the search engine!
No prefix is pre 1968, and by that number I would guess yours is late 1967 or early 68. If you have 4 numbers whited out I think that is the highest pre '68 serial number I have seen, because they generally went in order until they changed the prefix and then started again. Your barrel code is RW - and R is November (or 1968) and W is 1972.
My guess is the barrel is 1972 and is not original to the receiver, but nothing is surefire. I have seen a pre 1968 2-3/4' 12 gauge with an 'L' suffix, which by all accounts is non existent, and I have seen every imaginable 'barrel code', including none at all. The horseshoe is an assembly line mark. What could have happened. I do not trust Remington's dating service accuracy. If they were Match.com, you could end up with Nancy Pelosi. Going mostly on memory (dicey at best) the early 16s and 20 gauge standard weights did not have the stress relief slit behind the bolt handle slot, at least up thru 1973.
I do not know when they added that to all gauges. The 28 gauge and.410 Matched Sets in 1969 did have the relief slits, as did the LW and LT 20s. The much later Classic 16s had it too. What could have happened. I do not trust Remington's dating service accuracy. If they were Match.com, you could end up with Nancy Pelosi.
Remington 870 Serial Lookup
I tried figuring out the date of my 870TB at the society page and can't make sense out of it, so I thought I would ask for help here. The S/N is T743678V. It has a 30' barrel fixed choke (mod trap) Monty stock. Thanks for the help in advance. The receiver was most likely made in either 1974, 1975, 1976 or 1977 as indicated by the Prefix 'T' in the serial number, but keep in mind this is not completely accurate n determining the exact age of the firearm. Example; I have a 16 gauge 1100 I bought new in 1979 that has a 'M' prefix serial number and barrel code of 'PV' or June 1979! The 'V' on the end of the serial number means that your gun is a 12 gauge, 2 3/4' chamber.
What is the two letter stamp on the barrel? This would be the two letters on the left side of the barrel that are closest to the receiver.there will be a 'number' between these two letters and the receiver for reference. I do not care about the number as it indicates the guns assembly station in the plant, but the two letters will date the barrel. Fred G 'Progressivism'.new word - It's common but there's no sense in it. Thanks a bunch for the info. The barrel code has the letters B W and following that the #60 is also stamped on the left hand side of the barrel.
The 'B' if the month of January. The 'W' is the years of 1928, 1972, or 2002. The 870 did not exist in 1928 so that is not it. You receiver serial number closely matches the 1972 date so that is the correct year as your gun is obviously older then a 2002 model. So the barrel code indicates a manufacturer date of January 1972. We have done so much for so long with so little, we are now qualified to do anything with nothing! I love liberal math.

I have a 20' rifle sight slug and a 34' trap that have no marks at all except the choke. They are stamped on the bottom. They are factory barrels. You have to remove the barrel to find the code. Those barrels where made before 1968.
Between it's birth in 1950 and @1968 the 870 barrels where not stamped with date codes. We have done so much for so long with so little, we are now qualified to do anything with nothing! I love liberal math. It's like fiction, but with numbers and stuff.
Fred G 'Progressivism'.new word - It's common but there's no sense in it. I have owned one pre 1968 870 that did have a barrel code, I have seen a few others, and I still own several newer barrels with no date codes. Some came on the guns new and some were purchased separately. I wouldn't bet significant bucks on any Remington rollmarking other than serial numbers. And I have seen barrels on new guns that were 2 years or more older than the receiver by all the markings.
If there was a gameplan to cause confusion, they succeeded. I have even seen a completely rollmark free Model 1100 circa 1966 with only the serial number on it. What could have happened. I do not trust Remington's dating service accuracy.
If they were Match.com, you could end up with Nancy Pelosi. If there was a gameplan to cause confusion, they succeeded Truer words could not be spoken! The 'prefix' letter in the serial number will get you in a range of possible years your receiver was made. By contacting Remington, you can learn exactly when your receiver was made if they still have the records for your serial number.
The barrel code if present will tell you when your barrel was made, but barrels get changed from gun to gun. 'B' started in 1994 and probably went until early 1997 when 'C' would have wiggled it's way into the picture. 1995 is most likely correct and if the barrel code correlates then you have a good solid answer to your question.
